Columbia's Miracle Child Story:
Within a nine day period, the Bilton family of Orangeburg, South Carolina, faced a life-changing time when both mother and daughter began battling cancer together. Hannah was too young to fully understand her diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia at first.
"She never questioned why and never looked back. She faced this demon trying to take over her body like a true superhero," said Jason Bilton, Hannah's dad.
The day before Hannah's mom Wendy's surgery, her five year-old daughter shocked her with these words: "Mom, you're going to be okay. See, I had my port put in and I'm fine. It didn't hurt. You're going to be fine too."
Regardless of cancer's hardships, Hannah never wanted to quit. She knew the treatments were needed and she didn't complain. Hannah overcame cancer and has resumed life as a busy nine year-old without leukemia.
"She can do whatever she puts her mind to while forever wearing her superhero cape," said Jason Bilton.
Children's Hospital was founded in 1983 through the efforts of a group of pediatricians, hospital leaders and community volunteers. With the move of Children's Hospital into a renovated, freestanding building in May 2008, the first children's hospital in South Carolina is now the newest!
Our state-of-the-art freestanding hospital combines compassionate medical care with comfortable family centered spaces, age-appropriate play areas and therapeutic diversions to help reduce stress and encourage healing. The hospital and its services have thrived through the efforts of pediatric medical professionals dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children.
Today, Children's Hospital has more than 30 medical subspecialties devoted strictly to children. As a major pediatric referral center, more than 80,000 children are cared for each year in its inpatient and outpatient units.
